וידע יואב בר צרויה ארי לבא דמלכא למפק על אבשלום:
abshlwm el lmpq dmlka lba ary tsrwyh br ywab wyde
Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom.

ושלח יואב לתקוע ונסיב מתמן אתתא חכמתא ואמר לה אתאבלי כען ולבושי כען לבושי אבלא ולא תשופין משחא ותהא כאתתא דנן יומין סגיאין מתאבלא על מיתא:
mytha el mthabla sgyayn ywmyn dnn kaththa wthha mshkha thshwpyn wla abla lbwshy ken wlbwshy ken athably lh wamr khkmtha aththa mthmn wnsyb lthqwe ywab wshlkh
Joab sent to Tekoa and brought a wise woman from there, and said to her, “Please act like a mourner, and put on mourning clothing, please, and don’t anoint yourself with oil; but be as a woman who has mourned a long time for the dead.

ותהכין לות מלכא ותמללין עמיה כפתגמא הדין ושוי יואב ית פתגמיא בפומה:
bpwmh pthgmya yth ywab wshwy hdyn kpthgma emyh wthmllyn mlka lwth wthhkyn
Go in to the king and speak like this to him.” So Joab put the words in her mouth.

ואמרת אתתא דמתקוע למלכא ונפלת על אפה על ארעא וסגידת ואמרת פרוק מלכא:
mlka prwq wamrth wsgydth area el aph el wnplth lmlka dmthqwe aththa wamrth
When the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, showed respect, and said, “Help, O king!”

ואמר לה מלכא מה ליך ואמרת בקושטא אתתא ארמלתא אנא ומית בעלי:
bely wmyth ana armltha aththa bqwshTa wamrth lyk mh mlka lh wamr
The king said to her, “What ails you?” She answered, “Truly I am a widow, and my husband is dead.

ולאמתך תרין בנין ואתנציאו תרויהון בחקלא ולית דמשיזיב ביניהון ומחו חד ית חד וקטל יתיה:
ythyh wqTl khd yth khd wmkhw bynyhwn dmshyzyb wlyth bkhqla thrwyhwn wathntsyaw bnyn thryn wlamthk
Your servant had two sons; and they both fought together in the field, and there was no one to part them, but the one struck the other and killed him.

והא קמת כל זרעיתא על אמתך ואמרו הבי ונקטול ית דקטל אחוהי ונקטליניה בחובת נפשא דאחוהי דקטל ונשיצי אף ית ירותא ובעו למקטל ית חד יחידי דאשתאר בדיל דלא לשואה לבעלי שום ושאר על אפי ארעא:

Behold, the whole family has risen against your servant, and they say, ‘Deliver him who struck his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed, and so destroy the heir also.’ Thus they would quench my coal which is left, and would leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the surface of the earth.”

ואמר מלכא לאתתא אזילי לביתך ואנא אפקיד עלך:
elk apqyd wana lbythk azyly laththa mlka wamr
The king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give a command concerning you.”

ואמרת אתתא דמתקוע למלכא עלי די לי רבוני מלכא חובא ועל בית אבא ומלכא וכורסי מלכותיה זכאי:
zkay mlkwthyh wkwrsy wmlka aba byth wel khwba mlka rbwny ly dy ely lmlka dmthqwe aththa wamrth
The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord, O king, may the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and may the king and his throne be guiltless.”

ואמר מלכא מן דיימר ליך מלא ותיתיניה לותי ולא יוסיף עוד לאנזקה ביך:
byk lanzqh ewd ywsyp wla lwthy wthythynyh mla lyk dyymr mn mlka wamr
The king said, “Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he will not bother you any more.”

ואמרת ידכר כען מלכא מה דכתיב בספר אוריתא דיי אלהך בדיל לאסגאה אורחא קדם גאל דמא לחבלא ולא ישיצון ית ברי ואמר קים הוא יי אם יפול מסער ריש בריך לארעא:
larea bryk rysh mser ypwl am yy hwa qym wamr bry yth yshytswn wla lkhbla dma gal qdm awrkha lasgah bdyl alhk dyy awrytha bspr dkthyb mh mlka ken ydkr wamrth
Then she said, “Please let the king remember Yahweh your God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the earth.”

ואמרת אתתא תמלל כען אמתך קדם רבוני מלכא פתגמא ואמר מלילי:
mlyly wamr pthgma mlka rbwny qdm amthk ken thmll aththa wamrth
Then the woman said, “Please let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Say on.”

ואמרת אתתא ולמה חשבתא כהדא על עמא דיי וממליל מלכא פתגמא הדין כגבר חיב בדיל דלא לאתבא מלכא ית בדוריה:
bdwryh yth mlka lathba dla bdyl khyb kgbr hdyn pthgma mlka wmmlyl dyy ema el khda khshbtha wlmh aththa wamrth
The woman said, “Why then have you devised such a thing against the people of God? For in speaking this word the king is as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring home again his banished one.

ארי מיתא דמאית וכמיא דמתאשדין לארעא דלא אפשר להון דיתוספון כן לית אפשר לדינא דקושטא לקבלא ממון דשקר ודמחשב מחשבן בדיל דלא לבדרא מניה בדורא:
bdwra mnyh lbdra dla bdyl mkhshbn wdmkhshb dshqr mmwn lqbla dqwshTa ldyna apshr lyth kn dythwspwn lhwn apshr dla larea dmthashdyn wkmya dmayth mytha ary
For we must die, and are like water spilled on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

וכען דאתיתי למללא קדם מלכא רבוני ית פתגמא הדין ארי דחלונני עמא ואמרת אמתך אמליל כען קדם מלכא מאים יעבד מלכא ית פתגמא דאמתיה:
damthyh pthgma yth mlka yebd maym mlka qdm ken amlyl amthk wamrth ema dkhlwnny ary hdyn pthgma yth rbwny mlka qdm lmlla dathythy wken
Now therefore, seeing that I have come to speak this word to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid. Your servant said, ‘I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.’

ארי ישמע מלכא לשיזבא ית אמתיה מיד גברא לשיצאה יתי וית ברי כחדא מאחסנת עמא דיי:
dyy ema makhsnth kkhda bry wyth ythy lshytsah gbra myd amthyh yth lshyzba mlka yshme ary
For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

ואמרת אמתך יהי כען פתגמא דרבוני מלכא לניחא ארי כמלאכא דיי כן רבוני מלכא למשמע טב וביש ומימרא דיי אלהך יהי בסעדך:
bsedk yhy alhk dyy wmymra wbysh Tb lmshme mlka rbwny kn dyy kmlaka ary lnykha mlka drbwny pthgma ken yhy amthk wamrth
Then your servant said, ‘Please let the word of my lord the king bring rest; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. May Yahweh, your God, be with you.’”

ואתיב מלכא ואמר לאתתא לא כען תכסי מני פתגמא דאנא שאל יתיך ואמרת אתתא ימליל כען רבוני מלכא:
mlka rbwny ken ymlyl aththa wamrth ythyk shal dana pthgma mny thksy ken la laththa wamr mlka wathyb
Then the king answered the woman, “Please don’t hide anything from me that I ask you.” The woman said, “Let my lord the king now speak.”

ואמר מלכא היד יואב עמך בכל דא ואתיבת אתתא ואמרת חיי נפשך רבוני מלכא אם אית למסטי לימינא ולסמלא מכל די מליל רבוני מלכא ארי עבדך יואב הוא פקדני והוא שוי בפומא דאמתך ית כל פתגמיא האלין:
halyn pthgmya kl yth damthk bpwma shwy whwa pqdny hwa ywab ebdk ary mlka rbwny mlyl dy mkl wlsmla lymyna lmsTy ayth am mlka rbwny npshk khyy wamrth aththa wathybth da bkl emk ywab hyd mlka wamr
The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Joab urged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your servant.

בדיל לאקפא ית אפי פתגמא עבד עבדך יואב ית פתגמא הדין ורבוני חכים כחכמת מלאכא דיי למידע ית כל די בארעא:
barea dy kl yth lmyde dyy mlaka kkhkmth khkym wrbwny hdyn pthgma yth ywab ebdk ebd pthgma apy yth laqpa bdyl
Your servant Joab has done this thing to change the face of the matter. My lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.”
21
ואמר מלכא ליואב הא כען עבדית ית פתגמא הדין ואזיל אתיב ית עולימא ית אבשלום:
abshlwm yth ewlyma yth athyb wazyl hdyn pthgma yth ebdyth ken ha lywab mlka wamr
The king said to Joab, “Behold now, I have granted this thing. Go therefore, and bring the young man Absalom back.”

ונפל יואב על אפוהי לארעא וסגיד ובריך ית מלכא ואמר יואב יומא דין ידע עבדך ארי אשכחית רחמין בעינך רבוני מלכא דעבד מלכא ית פתגמא דעבדיה:
debdyh pthgma yth mlka debd mlka rbwny beynk rkhmyn ashkkhyth ary ebdk yde dyn ywma ywab wamr mlka yth wbryk wsgyd larea apwhy el ywab wnpl
Joab fell to the ground on his face, showed respect, and blessed the king. Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord, O king, in that the king has performed the request of his servant.”

וקם יואב ואזל לגשור ואיתי ית אבשלום לירושלם:
lyrwshlm abshlwm yth waythy lgshwr wazl ywab wqm
So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
24
ואמר מלכא יסתחר לביתיה ואפי לא יחזי ואסתחר אבשלום לביתיה ואפי מלכא לא חזא:
khza la mlka wapy lbythyh abshlwm wasthkhr ykhzy la wapy lbythyh ysthkhr mlka wamr
The king said, “Let him return to his own house, but let him not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, and didn’t see the king’s face.

וכאבשלום לא הוה גבר שפיר בכל ישראל לשבחא לחדא מפרסת רגלוהי ועד מוחיה לא הוה ביה מומא:
mwma byh hwh la mwkhyh wed rglwhy mprsth lkhda lshbkha yshral bkl shpyr gbr hwh la wkabshlwm
Now in all Israel there was no one to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty. From the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no defect in him.

ובספרותיה ית רישיה והוה מזמן עדן לעדן דמספר ארי יקיר עלוהי ומספר ליה ותקל ית סער רישיה מאתן סלעין במתקלא דמלכא:
dmlka bmthqla sleyn mathn ryshyh ser yth wthql lyh wmspr elwhy yqyr ary dmspr ledn edn mzmn whwh ryshyh yth wbsprwthyh
When he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year’s end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king’s weight.
27
ואתילידו לאבשלום תלתא בנין וברתא חדא ושמה תמר היא הות אתתא שפירת חיזו:
khyzw shpyrth aththa hwth hya thmr wshmh khda wbrtha bnyn thltha labshlwm wathylydw
Three sons were born to Absalom, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar. She was a woman with a beautiful face.

ויתב אבשלום בירושלם תרתין שנין ואפי מלכא לא חזא:
khza la mlka wapy shnyn thrthyn byrwshlm abshlwm wythb
Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and he didn’t see the king’s face.

ושלח אבשלום לות יואב לשלחא יתיה לות מלכא ולא אבה למיתי לותיה ושלח עוד תנינות ולא אבה למיתי:
lmythy abh wla thnynwth ewd wshlkh lwthyh lmythy abh wla mlka lwth ythyh lshlkha ywab lwth abshlwm wshlkh
Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. Then he sent again a second time, but he would not come.
30
ואמר לעבדוהי חזו אחסנתיה דיואב דסמיכא לדילי וליה תמן סעורין אזילו ואדלקוה בנורא ואדליקו עבדי אבשלום ית אחסנתיה בנורא:
bnwra akhsnthyh yth abshlwm ebdy wadlyqw bnwra wadlqwh azylw sewryn thmn wlyh ldyly dsmyka dywab akhsnthyh khzw lebdwhy wamr
Therefore he said to his servants, “Behold, Joab’s field is near mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire.” So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.

וקם יואב ואתא לות אבשלום לביתא ואמר ליה למה אדליקו עבדיך ית אחסנתא דילי בנורא:
bnwra dyly akhsntha yth ebdyk adlyqw lmh lyh wamr lbytha abshlwm lwth watha ywab wqm
Then Joab arose and came to Absalom to his house, and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?”

ואמר אבשלום ליואב הא שלחית לותך למימר איתא הלכא ואשלחינך לות מלכא למימר למה אתיתי מגשור טב לי עוד דאנא תמן וכען אחזי אפי מלכא ואם אית בי חובא ויקטלינני:
wyqTlynny khwba by ayth wam mlka apy akhzy wken thmn dana ewd ly Tb mgshwr athythy lmh lmymr mlka lwth washlkhynk hlka aytha lmymr lwthk shlkhyth ha lywab abshlwm wamr
Absalom answered Joab, “Behold, I sent to you, saying, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still. Now therefore, let me see the king’s face; and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”’”
33
ואתא יואב לות מלכא וחוי ליה וקרא לאבשלום ואתא לות מלכא וסגיד ליה על אפוהי על ארעא קדם מלכא ונשק מלכא לאבשלום:
labshlwm mlka wnshq mlka qdm area el apwhy el lyh wsgyd mlka lwth watha labshlwm wqra lyh wkhwy mlka lwth ywab watha
So Joab came to the king and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.
